Dundee’s politicians MUST admit the city is facing a housing emergency

Today, 210 children in Dundee woke up in temporary homeless accommodation.

Homelessness in Dundee is rising. Every day children are growing up without stability, people’s housing rights are being ignored and families are forced to choose between rent and food.

All evidence points toward an undeniable fact – Dundee is in a housing emergency.

Across Dundee, people and organisations have come together to form a Dundee Housing Emergency Coalition. It has developed a bold Housing Emergency Action Plan that could address the systemic failures that are pushing this city’s people to the edge. If the plan is adopted by the council, it means fewer families in temporary homeless accommodation, stronger tenant rights, and a fairer housing system for Dundee.

The first step is to accept the housing emergency for what it is.

This call isn’t just coming from housing activists. The Scottish Housing Regulator has identified the city’s homelessness services as being at risk of systemic failure. The council's own statistics paint a bleak picture, showing that 1,133 households in Dundee were assessed as homeless.

Business as usual isn’t working anymore. Declaring a housing emergency is an essential first step to ending it. It is a commitment to act with the urgency the situation demands.

Dundee City Council must act now. Send our pre-written email to local Dundee City councillors demanding that they support the declaration of a housing emergency and adopt the housing emergency action plan.

The people of Dundee are not sitting back waiting for politicians to step up – join the call.
